ESPELETTE “AOP” CHILI PEPPER

Espelette is a Basque sweet-hot chili pepper from in the Southwest region of France.
As an AOP produce, it grows in rigorous standards exclusively in and around Espelette, a quaint village from which it’s named.
A pinch of this “red gold” spice elevates dishes with a tame heat, mild sweetness, great acidity, and vibrant color.
Corinne personally seasons sautéed vegetables, grilled steak, roasted chicken, fish Meunière, eggs and more… with Espelette ground pepper. It substitutes a traditional black pepper. Try a chocolate mousse or chocolate truffles with a little pinch of Espelette powder… it’s fabulous!

ESPELETTE “AOP” SWEET-HOT CHILI PEPPER GROWN IN THE BASQUE REGION OF FRANCE AND ONLY!

AOP (protected designation of origin) is the strongest protection that can be afforded to a food. It’s used to classify food with characteristics that are completely unique to a place or region. To qualify for this status, the food must meet two specific criteria:

  • The essential properties of the food must be determined by the geographical location – both natural influences and distinct local knowledge.
  • All aspects of the production must take place in this area.

Our Espelette pepper is produced by Fagaldia family-run farm based in Itxassou in the outskirts of Espelette. It’s been owned by the same family for decades.
